I both enjoy and despise my comfort zone. It’s secure, but if I remain too long, it begins to seem like a prison. No wild creature, and we’re all wild creatures at the core, is content in a cage. Sure, the security of being fed, clothed, secure, and loved is appealing. But, in my opinion, humans are designed to search, seek, strive, and connect with a world that provides no assurances. When we play things too safe, we feel unhappy, much like a caged animal. “Safe” provides no challenge, no opportunity for progress, and no novelty. We wither and die on the inside if we don’t have those things; we watch too much TV, eat junk food, and numb out.
Could it be that the high frequency of depression in First World nations is due to our lifestyles not providing us with the challenges we require? To be healthy, we all need to get some exercise. Muscles must be broken in order to grow powerful. Is it true that our hearts and brains, too, need to be challenged in order to thrive?

Be Truthful
Pose inquiries. Make a list of what you believe to be true for you. What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts? What exactly are you looking for? What is of use? What really is the truth? The truth might be difficult to accept, but it will place you on a solid foundation. On firm ground, you can walk ahead. Right now, I’m “calling myself out” on the falsehood that I don’t have the capacity to alter things.
It is Feasible to Change
We have the ability to alter things. You may have had a vigorous life in the past, and you may do so again. Recognize that you have the ability to change and attempt new things. It’s a lie when I decide I’m a victim. It’s simply not true. Change may have been too difficult when I was unwell, but that is no longer the case.
It’s Alright to be Uneasy with Change
It is not without danger. We can’t stay in our comfort zones while also expanding. Growing up is going to be a challenge. It’ll even feel unnatural. Regardless, do it. The only way to expand your comfort zone is to do things that terrify you until they no longer do. Then do it again.
Change Comes in Stages
When you first start out, changes appear to be large, but they are actually a succession of little steps. It’s only a small collection of actions. They are the total of your daily activities. Over time, a little change in trajectory becomes a large difference. It doesn’t all happen at the same time.
Look into the Possibilities
Make a list of items that could lead you in the direction you want to go every day. Make a list of methods to broaden your horizons. Make a list of possible solutions. Make a list of things you could accomplish. The lists aren’t even required to be kept. The excellent ones will be remembered. Like your favorite Muppet, they’ll show up again and again.
